What is our fascination with balloons? Whether it is a really great twisted sculpture or a simple air or helium filled balloon most of us can’t help but smile when seeing balloons. They always make our day just a little be brighter. Is it the vibrant colors? The cool creation? Or maybe it is the endless possibilities.

I like to think it is the fact that we know balloons are only there for a moment. We know that soon they will be gone and must be enjoyed in the moment. Balloons are a great reminder that not everything lasts forever and we should take the time to enjoy them while we have the opportunity.

Whatever the reason, Higher Hope is thrilled to offer balloon art, entertainment, and decorations for a variety of events. Whether it is a birthday party, wedding, library, school, church, bar/bat mitzvah, or a corporate event I am pleased to offer fun, elegant, and unique balloon designs.

When you think of balloon art you probably think of dogs and swords. Well friend, my goal is to change your perception of what a balloon artist can do. When it comes to twisted art I am pleased to be one of the top artists available in the entire industry. The sculptures are impressive, but so is the entertainment value. Twisted Sculptures

I have been twisting balloons for the last six years and am proud to be a full time balloon artist. I make elaborate sculptures and I have even created large scale sculptures for competitions and for world record attempts. I love when parents biggest challenge of the evening is figuring out how to fit a really cool balloon sculpture into the car (don't worry just ask and I'll make cute and tiny as well).

Games

I love playing and creating party games using balloons. These games are designed for party goers of all ages. Just because you’re a parent doesn’t mean you get to sit on the sidelines!

Storytelling and Shows

For millennia storytelling has been a respected art form and in many cultures the only real way truth was passed down. I am very proud to call myself a balloon storyteller. I take traditional storytelling and give it a little “twist.” By creating props and costumes out of balloons I give a whole new visual realm to the world my stories create. Using stories I have created shows about cultures, secret agents, Christmas, history, science, and I continuously work on creating new stories. Balloon Twisting Classes

I have this crazy notion that every child should know how to twist basic balloon animals. Just as every child colors, paints, or draws they should experience the wonderful art of balloons. Your club, group, class, or party can learn the basics of balloon twisting in a 90 minute class. You’ll learn five basic balloon creations: dog, sword, giraffe, bear, and swan. Have fun creating these marvelous balloons for all your children, friends, and family. Also great for mission teams needing to break the language barrier. Balloons, like love, cross all challenges.

Educational Art Classes

If you have not yet noticed I have a passion for things balloon related. I mentioned earlier about my storytelling shows for schools and other events. One possible option is not to bring the balloons at all. I am also a trained speaker working with programs like Toastmasters to bring my audiences fun and entertaining speeches. While I give motivational speeches and sermons (I’m a licensed Baptist minister as well) across the country I also give speeches about balloons and my business. This is a really good option for career fairs and days at schools as well as at nursing homes. The young and old have a fascination with balloons and find it really interesting how a person like me makes a living playing with balloons.

Not only does Higher Hope entertain and twist with balloons, but I am also a proud balloon decorator. You may only think of balloon decor as arches and columns, but because of my skill with balloon animals and twisted sculptures I able to combine what many consider two separate art forms to create elaborate designs to making any event fun, elegant, beautiful, and unique.

But for those of you that do not know me let me introduce myself. My name is Jason Vaughn and I'm a professional balloon artist entertainer.

I'm so excited! I just finished an amazing day at T-Jam on the Road here in St. Louis. The amazing Guido Verhoef taught and he is truly a genius.

Celebrate The Unpoppables with a free balloon app!

The Unpoppables on TLC

Recognition for all the balloon artist community's hard work is starting to pay off! Part of that recognition is coming in the form of a brand new television show called "The Unpoppables" featuring three amazing balloon twisters.

The leader of this group seems to be Addi Somekh who is best known for traveling the world creating balloon hats and documenting his work. Next up is Brian Asman a great guy all around and creator of some of my favorite techniques. Then rounding off the team is the lovely Katie Laibstain a bundle of energy who I think hugs everyone she meets.

I've had the privilege or meeting Katie and spent a week in Jersey with Brian, but I've yet to meet Addi though I've respected his work for years.

The make-up of the show seems to be similar to another favorite show of mine on TLC, Cake Boss. It looks like the team will be followed around as they're hired for one or two events to create large and exquisite balloon art.

I'm really hopeful the show does well and that it gets people thinking of what can really be done with balloons. I can't say I can do everything the same way as these three, but with practice I can definitely service my customer's needs.

Eight years ago while on a mission trip with my Christian college I was introduced to the art of balloon twisting combined with Bible storytelling. Immediately I was entranced by this entertainment medium and before I knew it I was a professional balloon artist. Since that time I've had the privilege of performing hundreds of shows to both Christian and secular audiences using balloon costumes and props.

I've delivered many messages over the years in my show, but none are as important as the gospel of Jesus Christ, which I gladly present in “The Prince That No One Wanted.” This show is perfect for family events, VBS, Upwards, and a host of other venues. • No Mindless Entertainment Here!

Everyone loves entertainment! Whether it is in the form of movies, television, books, concerts, ect. we are addicted to fun. While that is fine one things Christians should avoid is an excess of mindless entertainment.

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Rom 8:7-8)

God's Word tells us to avoid setting our mind on the things of the flesh and much of our entertainment is very worldly, but with my gospel allegory your audience's mind will be engages just as much as their funny-bone.

• Loads of laughs and joy

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. (Jud 1:24-25)

In the presence of our king there is immense joy! Joy is so precious to the Christian. It is not based in our circumstances, but in our King! That is why I love performing “The Prince that No One Wanted” gospel allegory. It allows me to combine both laughter due to humor with the joy that comes from the gospel of Jesus Christ.

• Sound Historical Christian Theology

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. (Tit 2:1)

There are many places calling themselves churches today that do anything but teach the Word of God. When your audience sees and understands “The Prince that No One Wanted” they will be taught only that which stands in line with historical Christian doctrine. I'm a licensed Southern Baptist minister and trained in ministry at a Southern Baptist university. While I've had the opportunity to work in numerous denominations the primary message and doctrine remains that salvation of sins only comes by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ the second person of the Godhead, who was born of a virgin, is fully God and man, lived a perfect life, died on a cross taking the sins of His people and rose again three days later to reign as King eternal. For more on my teaching and theology please do not hesitate to ask.

• Creativity To Spark The Imagination

As the Temple of God was being built in the Old Testament the readers are told that God had gifted certain artists to work for His glory on the Temple. I believe that God still grants people gifts and talents to people for the same purpose of glorifying Him today.

As your audience sees elaborate balloon creations made into props and costumes and used in the sharing of the gospel many will be inspired to develop their own talents to the glory of God and the expansion of His kingdom.

• No “Cartoon Jesus” Allowed

Many dear saints with good intentions have used a variety of modern media to create cartoon or “Child friendly” versions of Jesus. While this may do some good I fear that it can often do more harm and make many wonder if Jesus is any more real than certain overweight men in red suits.

For this reason, instead of telling about the life of Christ with balloons and possibly adding to the challenge, I decided to go the way of John Bunyan and his classic “Pilgrim's Progress” and share the gospel in an allegory. This allows your audience to hear the the glory of the gospel message without fear of confusing Christ with fiction. After the allegory there is an explanation and gospel call to repentance and faith. A time of question and answer is available if desired as well.

St. Louis Children's Entertainer Risks Business to Save His Life

Fenton, MO January 7, 2010 – Local balloon twister and entertainer, Jason Vaughn of Higher Hope Balloons, has decided to put his entire business on the line to save his own life. The overweight artist, who last weighed in at 330 pounds, is offering every customer that books his Balloon Story Show on or before Valentine's Day the show absolutely free if he fails to weigh in below 300 pounds by June 1, 2010.

“I've always been a big guy, but I think it is time to take drastic actions. I can't afford a gym or trainer to motivate me, but I can create a great deal of pressure on myself. I'm losing something this year and it'll be weight or money. I'm striving for weight,” said Vaughn.

The decision came to him one night while watching Biggest Loser. He realized that beyond health a great motivator for the contestants was cash prizes. Even though Vaughn had auditioned he was not accepted on the show, but he realized he could create his own prize.

“After years of thinking about it I think it is time to put my money where my gut is,” said Vaughn.

As a balloon artist and story teller much of his income is from shows at libraries, child care facilities, churches and schools so this really is a big risk if he fails to lose the weight.

After word spread about this crazy marketing campaign the balloon twister even had a local gym, Anytime Fitness of Fenton, come along side him to support his efforts.

Wall Street Journal features fellow balloon artist

My friend, Jonathan Fudge, of Tampa, Florida was featured in the Wall Street Journal. He did a great job representing the balloon twister industry. Thanks and congratulations to balloon guy Mr. Fudge.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Jonathan Fudge studied his subject closely, furrowing his brow and taking it in from different perspectives. Then he dipped into his palette: a bag containing 2,000 balloons in 19 colors.

For the next 10 minutes at a birthday party here, he blew up more than 15 balloons, each with a slightly different amount of air, and twisted them in pairs and triplets.

"Getting one step wrong could be the difference between a masterpiece and an unrecognizable mass of balloon bubbles," says Mr. Fudge, a gregarious 23-year-old.

Finally, he handed the birthday boy the finished product -- a portrait of Luigi, a character from the Super Mario Bros. videogame, complete with twisted brown mustache, green body and white gloves. The boy smiled and asked him to autograph it.

Balloon entertainers are looking to inflate their image. Gone are the rudimentary swords and fishing poles of the past. Today's best and brightest construct 25-foot-tall sculptures of soccer players, life-size Harley-Davidson motorcycles and 3-D balloon versions of European art.

Mr. Fudge and others aren't shy about voicing their aspirations to be taken seriously. "What I do is art," says Mr. Fudge. "Just like there was a Renaissance for art in Europe, there's a renaissance in balloons today."

They are also making a good living, setting the stage for price wars and clashes over whether the endeavor is more culture or commerce.

For decades, face painters, jugglers and clowns twisted balloons as part of their acts. But their work wasn't much more sophisticated than stick drawings.

'La Vida Latex'

Over the past decade, many such entertainers stopped clowning around and specialized in balloons. In 1999, the first balloon-twisting convention, called T-Jam, was held in Austin, Texas. The profession has grown since. Up-and-comers like Mr. Fudge can learn the fundamentals from instructional books, Web sites and DVDs such as Don Caldwell's "Livin' La Vida Latex."

Big-name balloon artists such as Mr. Caldwell -- aka Buster Balloon -- of Garden Grove, Calif., and Larry Moss of Rochester, N.Y., earn as much as $2,500 an hour, compared with about $35 an hour for a typical performer.

Known for his large-scale projects, Mr. Moss has designed a 10-room, life-size haunted house and a 3-D balloon version of Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus," which he recently entered in an art show in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Florida artist Jonathan Fudge wants a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T for his craft of twisting balloons into colorful creations. According to WSJ reporter Tim Martin, Mr. Fudge hopes to hone his skills into greatness.

Balloon twisting is now the most-requested form of event entertainment on GigMasters.com, an online entertainment-booking service, surpassing DJs, cover bands, acoustic-guitar players and Elvis impersonators. Just four years ago, balloon twisters ranked No. 24, says co-founder Kevin Kinyon.

Entrepreneurs such as Benjamin Alexander of Land O' Lakes, Fla., help explain why. Through
his company, Balloon Distractions Inc., Mr. Alexander hires and trains balloon twisters from Seattle to Miami, booking them for four-hour gigs at restaurants.

In August, Balloon Distractions booked 1,118 gigs, more than doubling the prior August's 500. Mr. Alexander expects revenue this year to total $400,000 and to grow 75% in 2010.
"I took a corporate approach to balloons," says Mr. Alexander, who concedes he's not popular in the inner circles of ballooning. "Creative balloon artists make bad entrepreneurs."

David Brenion of Ojai, Calif., says he's more interested in perfecting his art than inflating his bank account. Twice a month, he makes a five-hour round trip to "jam" with other twisters. Mr. Brenion, 27, says his creativity "starts to stagnate" at home. But at the jams, "you all feed off each other, and it's this crazy, colorful feedback loop," he says. "It's awesome."

Todd Neufeld, 35, of Brooklyn, N.Y., worked as a small-business lawyer and planned to become a patent attorney before embracing the life of a ballooner.

"If I had become a patent attorney, I would sit in a cubicle for the rest of my life, poring over the fine print in the notes of inventors," says Mr. Neufeld. Still, he used his legal knowledge to pen a book, "Sign Here! Contracts for Balloon Entertainers."

Mr. Neufeld doesn't just work for kids. At a holiday party for a university's clinical-psychology program, he says, he rendered a double-helix model of DNA.

As balloon artists gain in popularity, full-time ballooners are getting into price wars with part-timers. Twister Dave Bigelow of Fullerton, Calif., says he was put on an unofficial "hated twisters list" because he charges $50 an hour, which the part-timer says is below the market price for his area.

Ballooning veteran Billy Damon of Orlando, Fla., a full-timer, says Balloon Distractions has wooed away some of his restaurant clients by charging $10 an hour -- about one-fifth of his going rate. Nearly all of the money goes to Balloon Distractions. The performers work mainly for tips.

"Every restaurant I go into now has a balloon person," says Mr. Damon, 50, who calls the "We Twist for Tips" buttons worn by Balloon Distractions' entertainers "tacky." Mr. Alexander says the buttons were switched months ago to read: "Tips R Cool!"

Mr. Fudge started twisting balloons in elementary school. By high school, he was landing gigs at restaurants and birthday parties. He dabbled in juggling and whip cracking before settling on balloons. He likes that he can send his work home with the audience.

"They take part of me," he says. "My life, my time, my effort, my energy is going to them."
Mr. Fudge estimates that he spends about $2,000 a year on videos, seminars and magazine subscriptions to develop his skills. Today, he earns about $150 per appearance and about $50,000 a year.

Artistic Heroes

Mr. Fudge, who says his artistic heroes are Picasso and Rembrandt, is finding that beauty remains in the eye of the beholder. At a Mexican restaurant one recent night, he made a purple butterfly, a brown puppy and a green alligator.

Then a little boy asked him to make R2-D2, the three-wheeled droid from "Star Wars." Mr. Fudge spiraled and corkscrewed three long white balloons into a latex robot, roughly the size of a box of cereal. As finishing touches, he drew a blue line and some black boxes. A young girl at the table grimaced.

"That doesn't look like a real R2-D2," she told Mr. Fudge, who quickly changed the subject.

Moments later, when Mr. Fudge was working the next table, the young girl flung the R2-D2 into the air. It landed in a plate of sour cream.

What I do and Why I do it!

I keep getting asked for a job description when filling out forms. As we are in a world where most people do so many things it gets harder to describe our occupation (or multipation) in just a few words. So if you are wondering what I do and why i do I would love to tell you.

And just in case you are really wanting the 5 sec. version.
I am a professional balloon artist that acts as an ambassador for companies and families to bring people together.

What I do and why I do it:

1. I make balloon sculptures from the simple to the elegant.
2. I create an atmosphere for moments and memories.
3. I make people of all ages smile.
4. I twist tubes of latex into something that reminds people of a great past.
5. I encourage people to think bigger about who they are.
6. I love people not because of who they are, but because of who I am and who they can be.
7. I teach people to dream and think outside the box.
8. I tell stupid joke that still get a laugh because people are looking for a reason to laugh.
9. I bring people of all ages, races, and religions together through joy.
10. I help people forget that current pain by remembering a great past.
11. I help people forget their pain by inspiring them to a better future.
